October 19, 2011- 20th ANNUAL Meeting of the BOARDS

 

Nancy Cronk & Chief Markham –CUNNINGHAM FIRE DISTRICT – Nancy gave their report- Chief Rhodes was unable to attend this year. She said their financial team went over the budget and found funds to avoid any lay offs. They have received the Pinacle Circle of Safety awards 3 times- which no other district has achieved. They have a vacancy open on their Board. She recommended coming to their Open Houses. They do a lot of safety programs in the schools. Currently they are remodeling station #63 on Picadilly and some of their people will be staying at the station on Berry & Tower during that time.. 70% of their calls are Emergency Medical Services. On Labor Day they collected $20,000 in the boot campaign. They donated old equipment to Africa- an ambulance, etc. Jerry is the chair of the Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation and leader of the Western Division of Fire chiefs.

EAST CHERRY CREEK VALLEY WATER & SANITATIN DISTRICT Erin they will be doing hydrant flushing with Cunningham fire. They had a successful irrigation season.- all demands were met. They have a new website ECCV.org with useful information for homeowners & videos. In November they will send out new billing statements with a graph showing water usage. They celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2012. The new water treatment plant will open April 2012.

IREA ( Intermountain Rural Electric) Rick Chapel –not in attendance this year.

Nancy Sharpe – County Commissioner –-Construction is down 31% and they have a @ million dollar shortfall. The budget comes out in mid December. This year they opened Vote Centers for the elections although 80% vote by mail. County will be moving to buildings they purchased on Lima & Arapahoe Road. They are working on Fracking regulations, protecting infrastructure and transportation projects. #1 is Arapahoe Road & parker Rd soon to be finished. #2 is Arapahoe Road & I-25 which is the next big project. Arapahoe county will be celebrating it’s 150th year in 2012. They are hoping the Open Space tax will pass.

RonWeidmann Centennial City Councilman – Centennial Park Center is under construction. Financially the City has no outstanding debt and is in good shape. In 2013 they plan to raise Arapahoe Rd to put a bridge over Cherry Creek. The bike path on S. Telluride slows traffic down- have had many comments on it. The city is working on site enforcement – for example tree limbs blocking stop signs. Code enforcement – can’t pick up dead animals or wild life. They are getting a grant for new bus benches.

 Wendy DeBell CHERRY CREEK School Board – Cherry Creek is the 4thlargest school district in the State with 51,000 students covering 108 square miles, with 7200 employees, 285 buses 186 regular buses and 99 special buses. They serve 30,000 meals per day and over 100 languages are spoken by the students. They lost 81 million in funding. They have to make 15 million more cuts. The new science, math & technology building is up and running on the Overland campus for students in 6-12th grades.- NASA came to visit. They are closing the achievement gap with this facility. On November 19th from 9-12:30 P.M. at a cost of $10.00 for adult, $5.00 for middle school students & $3.00 for elementary students Dr. Ben Carson Author of “Gifted Hands” will be speaking at Overland High 12400 E. Cherry Creek schools will be honoring all veterans the week of Nov. 7-11- there is an essay contest district wide.

GRAYSON ROBINSON - ARAPAHOE COUNTY SHERIFF- www.arapahoesheriff.org. or grobinson@co.arapahoe.co.us for 6 years Centennial has been named the safest city to live in. They have received 5 accreditations at the Sheriff’s department for meeting best practices. When he knew IKEA would be opening Sheriff Robinson sent 4 people from the department to Tempe , AZ for experience on an IKEA opening. He said they had visitors from as far as Missouri for the IKEA opening and IKEA said it was the smoothest opening ever. IKEA paid for 5 ½ weeks of security from the Sheriff’s Department. The Impact Team from the department who ride around on bike’s, etc. do flexible jobs and has expanded to 11 members. There were 6 residential daytime burglaries in Piney Creek and they just caught the burglar.. At the Fairgrounds they will be setting up a permanent station- they will offer drivers training forgroups for a small fee, they will have a storage facility, etc. The dispatch center has been remodeled they have e911 authority funds and radio communication is their #1 priority.

Janet Schneider Arapahoe Library District 303-693-7449 –had a 9% decrease in funds- but they are solvent. The summer reading program was a big success. They are working on child & family library services and literacy programs.

Smoky Hill Metro District ( Parks& Recreation Chris McKay – 64% of the Smoky Hill Homeowners voted to renew the taxes for the district . Chris thanks me for recommending Steve Pulford for the maintenance job. The Clubhouse is in use 300 days a year. Future park work- they are working to get 2 grants through a new member of the Board Pat Martin. SmokyhillMetroBoard.org is their website.
